USS Dominik @ Victoria

USS stands for underground’s secret search, and it is about exploring things around London’s underground station. Read more about it in my introduction: https://dominiksymonowicz.com/2017/07/07/uss-dominik-underground-secrets-search-introduction/

This station is in zone 1 and belongs to the City of Westminster.

The tube station was opened on 24.12’1868. However, Victoria Railway Station was open 1.10’1860. It is the third most busy station on London Underground.

I’m not too fond of this station, because I use it during peak time to and from work. Overcrowding is an epic here thanks to Railway Terminus( including Gatwick Express that is overpriced and not the fastest way to get to Gatwick Airport), Victoria Coach Station that serves domestic and international routes. Sometimes, I walk directly to Green Park to avoid this station.

While the underground station is boring, but railway station is worth exploring around old facades as it has some historical maps and elements. The area around the station is chaotic, but if you go around, it gets incredible because it is full of different architectural styles.

Some interesting historical events and Trivia

  • According to British Transport Police, for three years (between 2015 to 2018), Victoria has had the fourth-highest crime incidents.
  • It is the deepest station and platform level on the Circle line.

Is Good independent coffee place nearby?

I liked to go for a coffee in Gastronomia Italia, but sadly it was closed down.

I tried “Coffee geek and friends” also. This place ticks all items for a bland hipster coffee place—pricy, toilet tiles, wood and so on. The chair is very uncomfortable, so if you like “copy and paste” boring hipster place to stay with average service, this place is for you.

For a long time, I was frustrated to find a good place.

Things changed when I discovered the best coffee place named a Coffee Addict (https://www.coffeeaddictofficial.com/). Epic design (I hate pink, so it is not my cup of tea, but I appreciate when the owner put heart into the design), fantastic coffee and excellent service. It is like must visit coffee place when you are in this area.

For quick Colombian coffee, Hermanos is a decent place too.

Is Good pub nearby?

I went to a few pubs around, and my favourite one is Windsor Castle. The place looks great because of its Victorian pub style. They serve Samuel Smith beers. The restaurant part looks impressive, but the food is painfully “Weatherspoony”, so I suggest trying food somewhere else and coming here for a few pints. This place is worth visiting for a pint!

Is Good restaurant nearby?

They are many chains, but so far, I didn’t find any unique and interesting ones. If you fancy takeaway during lunch, I suggest going to “Delicias de Portugal”, they have lovely sandwiches at a great price.

Interesting walks nearby?

There are a few big parks nearby. Check my post about Green Park for .. Green Park, Hyde Park Corner for … Hyde Park and St. James’s Park for .. St. James Park. This place is full of various designs, so it is an excellent place to explore on foot to find hidden gems.

Summary

I don’t like Victoria station for its overcrowding madness. Victoria railway station has an amazing outside facade but inside is modern chaos. However, this place is full of hidden gems to explore when you walk around because it shows you how modern design can destroy magnificent old architecture.
